Peter Jackson is working with the Imperial War Museum to restore and improve old film from the First World War. The results are really quite  stunning. I just hope they don’t colorize colourise it, or take 45 minutes of footage and expand it into three epic movies.

One of my favorite standup bits of all time, courtesy of Norm McDonald. This was shortly before Letterman retired. WWI bit starts about 5:00 if you’re impatient.

Come for the comedy, but stay for The Feels.

The more I hear the LOTR score the less I like it.

restoration is getting very very good. I see a little frame interpolation artifacts, but I can certainly live with them.

“ Improve”

* Remembers the dwarves riding barrels through the rapids in The Hobbiy*

Sure

That’s exactly why I’ve never watched all THREE of those movies.

I’m still quite fond of it, but i t’s at its best when it’s not attempting to beat you to death - which is most of the time. I mostly prefer it over “insert generic Hans Zimmer score”, with the possible exception of the original Pirates.

little frame interpolation artifacts

If you say so! To me, it looks like playing with the contrast slider in Lightroom.

Hey, Jar Jar Binks came out when I was 19, so everything else seems ok in comparison.

I was never much a fan of the Shire music. I get what he was going for, but I think it’s a bit shallow, and I just get sick of hearing it throughout the film. But yes, anything is better than Han Zimmer.

well they are going from, what I would guess is 16 fps, to 24 fps so they have to invent frames to fill the gaps. They do it by comparing one frame to the next using an algorithm to invent the missing frame based on where the pixels were and are.

I’ve played with it myself but the results can get a little weird. They are obviously using a lot better techniques than I’ve used.

Better techniques, and probably significantly better equipment.

You didn’t like the random cuts to a GoP ro floating down a river?

It’s definitely not the Shire themes for me. The latter two thirds of The Lighting of the Beacons , on the other hand... In the films, a support to some of the best imagery, and very well staged. It evokes the fires spreading over the mountains and the long low perspective shots of Edoras, and therefore still manages to thrill.

“Rohan had come at last.”

The best line in the books. Give me chills typing it.

For a truly immersive experience the film speed needs to be correct. It’s great to see they’ve compensated for the frame rate.

How much aerial combat footage from WWI exists?

I have absolutely no idea, but I haven’t seen very much. Those  were hand cranked cameras back then, and it would have been a PIA to take one up, I imagine.

He doesn’t need it. Peter Jackson built his own WWI Air Force.  http://www.omaka.org.nz/

I hadn’t noticed that until you mentioned it, and I’ve been watching that GIF I made over and over . The difference is subtle, but once you see it it makes so much sense. I am very familiar with that sped up feel of the old films, and I knew it was a feature of all the film I’d seen from that era, but never really thought about it. It’s like saying that WWI and WWII happened in black and white, and WWI happened faster. B ut seeing them slowed down to “normal” is fascinating. Thanks for pointing that out.
